as some people seem to give a shit about stuff like this these days, i should probably mention that we're a non-profit club - all proceeds go to the edinburgh uni scifi society to buy books and dvds. if you're a scifi nerd, you'll realise that this is a great idea. if you're not a scifi nerd, just be thankful that by buying them books and dvds, you're helping to keep them off the streets.

the 3 djs are all vegetarian or vegan, and we keep our records in a pleasant free range environment between gigs, feeding them exclusively on organically grown dust. there is however, an unavoidable necessity to cram them into veal crates in order to transport them to the venue.

we've been running this particular club for about 13 years or so, but some of the *cough* older djs have been doing this kinda thing for about 20 years now. despite that, we haven't really gotten any better at it, and no - we haven't got many new records, either :)

this time, we have the added bonus of skullculture hassling the plastic and some free perplex city cards to get you addict.. err, started :)

we've been supplied with a stack of perplex city freebies.

FALL DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE
perplex city is game of many levels.

on the surface, it's about puzzle cards. buy some cards, solve 'em, input the unique card number into the site and it tells you whether you're right or wrong.

scratch the surface and you fall into the massive alternate reality game.

someone stole the mysterious receda cube from perplex city, and hid it somewhere on earth. the citizens of perplex city turned to us for help.

the cards are designed to help get us up to speed as puzzle solvers - although there are various clues to the wider game sprinkled among them. for instance on one card, you are asked to work out violet's phone number from clues such as:

my number has 11 digits, and they sum to 44. the first is the number of vowels in syzygy, the second - corners on a cube, deadly sins ....

solve it, and you get some points.

RING it, and you hear a link to her blog.

read the blog and get links to free cards, story snippets, hints as to who stole the cube...

it's huge.

there are heat sensitive cards, UV reactive cards, what looks like a massive solitaire cipher sprinkled across the cards, a printed message that can only be seen when you have 'em all, map tiles on the back of most cards that build a map of perplex city ...

thanks to everyone who came along on saturday and helped to make it a fun night. special thanks to skullculture for making it out despite the lures of perplexcity, and to miss waspish for being the evening's dancetronic 3000, even dancing to songs that she hates, cos she was on a roll :)

we got a couple of firsts on saturday. one first is that we got paid. sfsoc told us that they've been doing quite well recently, and had bought loads of dvds and books, and felt guilty about all the money that we make them - so we got £20 each :) i told them that we were happy enough doing it for the fun of it but i'm not a total fool, and if someone offers me money, i'll take it.

we also got our first written review. a young girl, slightly the worse-for-drink, wrote on our request sheet:

we've been waiting ages for a half decent song. you guys suck so bad. you make me want to leave.

i like it. short and to the point, and the perfect size to fit on our next poster.

apparently we were just playing techno, and she wanted some songs with 'guitars, guitars with cock in'. now - i'm no expert - but i would've thought that the risks of electrocution or possibly some kind of intimate egg-slicer accident would mean that not many people did this.

graeme has the setlist, and once it's transcribed i'll bung it up. if memory serves, it'll be peppered with slightly more dodgy cover versions than usual...

next date is saturday 6th may, and that'll be it until after the summer.

in the meantime, BITCH is on this saturday (11th) in the terrace bar at teviot. they play a good mix of stuff, as you can tell from the setlists on their page. see you there...
